Contentshe had no news from her; he only hears alarming news from Hamburg [cholera epidemic]; he does not enjoy his stay in Frankfurt; in the company of young men and women he feels as if among ghosts mechanically playing an old game; talks of a plant which turns its head to the sun in order to live; he might not return to Hamburg before 10/10/1892; sends greetings to John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] and Wilhelm [Hertz]; clarifies what he had wanted to say to her before they were disturbed: he regards their relationship as more than an engagement and less than a real union; mentions the religious difficulties he encounters in his family; they are not an engaged couple in the everyday sense, hopes that in time they may be allowed to walk through life together; until such time it is nobody's business to know about their relationship; ends his letter with 'Gott befohlen' [literally 'entrust yourself to God', adieu]
