| Contents | thanks for letter, is very pleased that he receives at least one letter daily; the artistic impressions he gets of Rome are strong; he is quite exhausted, though, the weather is bad; the street scene in Rome is very colourful, he notes the great number of Roman Catholic priests, all with their distinct colourful sashes, pipings, clergyman's bands, but always the same type of person; the fat priests look as if their heads are simply extensions of their fat bellies; it is as difficult to work in the libraries in Rome as in Florence; there is a glut of antiquities so that he is no longer interested in sculpture and buildings from classical antiquity, although he liked the Pantheon and Palatin; the plaster casts of classical sculpture take away the fresh impressions one has when looking at the originals; likewise, he 'curses' photography because of the false colours which weaken the first impressions one has when looking at the originals; praises Moritz Warburg for buying a painting by Antonello da Messina and is looking forward to seeing the [Max] Liebermann painting; calls Lutt. [Ascan Lutteroth] 'nothing but an artisan'; wants to know whether he will have a room in the house rented for the summer; will he be given a broom cupboard like in Niendorf?; but he liked the park in Niendorf; wants to know more about the American visitors, has Olga 'increased in weight and wisdom'?; on 03/05/1895 his thoughts were with them in Hamburg; mentions goose liver paté and wants Charlotte to keep some for him, as he will be in Germany in two weeks; he will either travel via Bologna to Hamburg or with A. von der Osten from Naples by boat; he met Anton May again, 'a very interesting man'; sends greetings to Paul and Olga to welcome them back home in Hamburg |
