Contents'Marieke' [Mary Warburg] has written a lovely letter to Wilhelm for Christmas; thanks her and thanks Warburg for taking such good care for his physical well-being; his digestion is good, his problems were a reaction to being posted to the front; he liked reading the book by [Alfred] Weber; is convinced that the biggest work for Germany will have to wait until after the war, but it needs to be thought about and prepared now; 'we intellectuals' need to be aware, if reconstruction does not happen through hard labour then it will have to happen through intellectual work; it is necessary to reduce the sweat and labour of their children by planning and not leaving everything to improvisation; he is happy, his work, action and thinking, makes him happy; all he has to think about is to be ready, this reduces the burden on him and frees up his time to think; thanks Warburg for supplying intellectual fare; appeals to Warburg to continue their good relationship as friends, they owe it to heir wives; 'the interior connectedness between the sexes is part of German culture'
