Contentsthanks him for card; hopes that he has received a card from Petris; it is his second day in Florence; describes the train journey across the St. Gotthardt pass, saw the Orion on the night sky, etc.; he had to change in Milan, walked through this 'un-Italian' city, enjoyed seeing the faces of children; he did not like the cathedral, after having seen German gothic cathedrals he was not impressed with it, it was too highly decorated for his taste; the stretch from Milan to Bologna, the Po plain, was very boring, like a long allotment garden; saw vines, mulberry trees; continues next day: [Robert and Philippine] Davidsohn send greetings; is very impressed with the atmosphere they create, has so far never experienced anybody like them, feels their spiritual and moral dignity; on the stretch from Bologna to Florence he saw Bersaglieri in the train, cypress trees in the landscape; on his way from the train station to the Petri hotel [Luigi and Anna Petri] he saw Santa Maria Novella, Strozzi, Ponte, Santo Spirito
