Lecturer at the Warburg Institute (1945-1960); Professor of History of Art, Bryn Mawr College 1960-75 (Emeritus); Andrew Mellon Professor in the Humanities (1975-80); Edith Cleaves Barry Visiting Professor of Art History and Criticism, Bowdoin College (1980-82); Clark Professor at Clarke Institute, Williams College (1982); Kress Professor at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington (1984-85).
HistoryEducated at Merchant Taylor's School and at St John's College, Oxford. He received his BA in 1934 and a BLitt in 1939; simultaneously worked as an assistant at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich (1935-1939). He joined the civilian staff of the Admiralty in 1939 and later received commissions in the Special Branch of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) and British Naval Intelligence during World War II. Having previously held two visiting appointments in the United States, he left London permanently in 1960 for a position at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. After leaving Bryn Mawr in 1980, he held several short term professorial appointments in the eastern United States before finally retiring in 1985.
