History | Practiced as a medical doctor in London. Went to Saint Louis, Missouri to attend lectures (1867), decided to stay and applied with the Kansas Pacific Railway for survey and mapping expedition as photographer.Leader of the survey General William J. Palmer; together they founded the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and Bell and Palmer went on to found some 30 businesses; founded Manitou, Colorado; construction of his mansion, Briarhurst Manor (completed 1876), at Manitou Springs, west of Colorado Springs. Returned to Britain towards the end of the century, visiting occasionally. |
