Activity | First German publishing house specialised in art and art history. Founded by Ernst Elert Arthur Heinrich Seemann (1829-1904) in Essen as 'E. A. Seemann, Verlags- und Sortimentsbuchhandlung, verbunden mit Kunst-, Musikalien u. Antiquariatsbuchhandel“. Move to Leipzig (15/08/1861). Seemann headed the company between 1858-1899, he handed it over to his son Artur Seemann (1899-1925), who shared the responsibility with Gustav Kirstein (1899-1933). Artur's son Elert (1892-1989) joined the company (1923-), who later became party member of the NSDAP; the company concentrated on printing propaganda material during the war years, but also printed several art historical books of the time (W. Pinder; Thieme-Becker). |
