| Contents | Hirschler cannot leave Paris without writing to her what and how he thinks in the present question [of their proposed marriage]; his earlier short stay in her parents’ house had given him the impression she liked him; he had hoped when he proposed to her so quickly that she would also see in him the man whom she wanted to give hand and heart; she however accepted this proposal with a calm and coolness that left him trembling; on reflection, he now understands this behaviour as a sign of her dedication and love to her parents; since then he has been received by her relatives with warmness, but also with questions that one does not ask a man whom one wants to entrust one child with; such a treatment he had not expected; however, he is in fact delighted to see that a woman he likes so much has such concerning relatives and that she will now follow the advice of her uncle; with regard to him, if he had known her family better then he would probably have considered better whether to disturb her life in the way he did; he hopes that she and her parents will forgive him |
