| Contents | hopes that his letter reaches her in Hamburg; confirms that he was not involved in the incident with the elephants, when five people died; the Centenary festivities are chaotic; the daughter of his landlord, 15 years of age, was knocked down by a carriage and has broken two ribs and hurt her foot; it seems that festivals and processions are organised when a community has too much money; too many people flood into the city, the 'dumpling devouring' and 'beer drinking' magistrates cannot prepare for every eventuality; originally he did not want to watch the processions, but he happened to be near the spot where panic broke out; his friend [Ludwig] Byns very nearly was killed; the elephants were quite placid, but the stupid rabble goaded them; Ludwig I is worshipped like a Saint, the distance of hundred years transfigures everything; wants to stay in Munich as long as possible, but does not think he can make trips into the mountains as the weather is quite bad; do uncle Moritz [Moritz Nathan Oppenheim] and aunt Kätie [Katharina Oppenheim] plan to visit him in Munich?; Felix mentioned it in one of his cards; complains about guiding people round exhibitions; everybody seems to have the right to pass judgment on paintings; compares it to a child only distinguishing between what is edible and what is poisonous; on the task of the young generation of art historians: they have to make clear that not everybody can talk about art in public without having studied it; this would be as ridiculous as listening to people talking about medicine without having been trained as doctors; sends greetings |
