| Contents | thanks for his letters, news from uncle [Moritz Oppenheim] and Felix Warburg; he has not time to write during the week; in Hamburg, the [cholera] epidemic is receding, the newspapers publish numbers of the sick and dead; the wife of 'our poor [E.] Bieber' has died, leaving five small children; everybody in Alsterufer is fine, even if Max could kill by poisoning Aby S. Warburg at times; [Adolf] Dorner, however, is a very calm staff member; the worst of the epidemic is over, the health service has worked very well even if a number of things had been badly organised; everybody is outraged at the Emperor, who has not sent his condolences since the outbreak of the epidemic three weeks ago; charitable committees have sprung up in Antwerp, but not in Germany; the city of Hamburg does not need any aid from Berlin, the city has raised Mark 500,000 and private individuals have raised Mark 6 to 700,000; in three weeks the 'Frankfurter Zeitung' has not thought of doing anything for Hamburg, all Frankfurt wants is to lock its gate; what are the rich Frankfurt citizens doing?; their charity only extends as far as looking after their own beggars and sick; it is easy for those who can fend for themselves |
