Contentswants to know how he is; she has drawn a line under her youth and hopes that they can be good friends in their mature years; asks for his forgiveness, realizes that she has tortured him, disappointed him; she wished she had acted differently; she remembers that he said that they will need fifteen years to understand each other; she wished to discuss his work with him as she trusts his judgment; she misses her teacher, Miss [Wilhelmine] Niels; she continues her classes with Th. Herbst and learns a great deal, but the relationship is not as personal as it was with Miss Niels; Herbst is interested in techniques and crafts and Mary realizes that she has to learn much much more; is looking forward to the summer when she can paint outside; she and father planned a trip through Italy in March and April, but they do not want to get involved in the tourist season; they therefore will travel to England for a few weeks; her father has to be return by June because of the visit of the Emperor to Hamburg; Mary spent one week in Berlin, met her brother John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz, stayed at Springer's; Wilhelm Hertz has hurt the other knee and is in the army hospital; for the moment, Mary is again nursing her mother until the Nurse [Helene Peters] returns from holiday; Mary has not seen Olga Warburg for some time
