| Contents | Paul thinks that Warburg is already in Japan and hopes that Warburg will enjoy his stay in Japan; supplies him with some information: his guide was called Tetsugo Joschida, the Hotel de l'Europe will give Warburg Tetsugo's address; Mr. Kaufmann, of Simon Evers & Co, knows the guide; Paul sends greetings to Simon Evers, to Kaufmann; encloses a card for Walter Elkan, who represents Pächter, Berlin, in Japan; Elkan can help Warburg purchase Japanese arts and crafts; [Paul] Kohn-Speyer will send Warburg a card for Mr. Ed. Chiosone in Tokyo who has a wonderful collection of Japanese bronzes; Paul Warburg and Paul Kohn-Speyer visited him, Mr. Chiosone was the director of the Japanese money press; he has retired, but knows the Japanese court and the university and will be a very useful contact for Warburg; the German Dr. [Karl] Florenz, working in the university, was with Paul on the same voyage across the Pacific; advises him to get letters of introduction to German embassy, to university professors; Kyoto looks lovely in spring, it is much more Japanese than Tokyo, the silk industry is situated there, embroidery, cloisonné, ivory, lacquer; he should spend time in Kyoto, Tokyo and Nikko; he should not go to Mianoshta [recte: Miyanoshita], but should visit villages as well; advises him to take a coat with him; Paul Warburg will try to get letters of introduction through the good services of Victor Goldschmidt, Dr. Goldzieher and [Senator Heinrich?] Burchard; he will not send letters of introduction to merchants as tourists call on them continuously; a young man, Dieckmann, from Realgymnasium in Hamburg, works in the firm Simon Evers; when buying anything Warburg needs to bargain and needs to pay only a third of the price; advises him to buy a Japanese dictionary and learn a few phrases; advises him to buy the book 'Things Japanese';Moritz thanks Warburg for a cable with congratulations [on his birthday]; wishes him a good time in Japan; everything is fine in Hamburg; James Loeb has arrived and seems to be very fond of Warburg; Moritz agreed to Warburg's trip to Japan because he wants to fulfil the wishes of his children; reports from Johannesburg [Max Warburg] and New York [Felix Warburg] are good; Simon Evers & Co will look after Warburg in Japan and Warburg will be able to draw money there; advises him, when buying anything, to bargain 'like the most common horse Jew' |
