| Contents | thanks him for his long letter; is looking forward to Max Warburg's report on the visit to Helmstedt; John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] has made an excellent impression on Warburg and Mary, his life in Helmstedt is really very very modest; comments on the re-election of [William] McKinley, which will contribute to calm the American business atmosphere; was very pleased that Sch. [Schinkel] offered Max Warburg a partnership and agrees that Max Warburg could not accept it; the money offered would have been attractive, but finds it more important that Max keeps his independence; finds the theft case in the office very serious; one should not employ sons of postal employees; what they lack is an honest business morality; would like to hear the conversations of people employed in telegraph offices, as they have knowledge of business transactions; is sorry for the parents of the young apprentice who took his life; he is looking forward to receiving the 'library statute'; he had the same idea as Max, to see his own library as part of the library project financed by his brothers; he has kept all bills of book purchases since his student days and has spent Mark 10,000 on books since 1889; in the last few years he has spent annually Mark 2,500 to 3,000; the amount of Mark 5000 per year would enable him to build up 'something really good and extraordinary', books as well as photographs; he no longer chases after 'discoveries', his research is making good progress; on the downside, he is exhausted, which finds expression in being overly unnecessarily worried; he is eating less for breakfast; is looking forward to good news from Nina [Warburg]; is sorry that Moritz [Warburg] is not very well; Moritz should have gone to the seaside in the summer; Wiesbaden might help him now; advises Moritz to consult Dr. [Heinrich] Embden; did Max like Embden's article on [Friedrich?] Bülau?; Warburg liked it very much; liked the essays [in 'Der Lotse'] by Momme Nissen, but not by Carl [Mönckeberg] on Otto Ernst; on a charity performance of Toni O'Swald's [Antonie O'Swald's] play; to pander to bourgeois ideas of respectability, the story line was altered in the short act between the two longer acts, to explain that the unmarried girl of the first act had got married before she had her child in the second act; does not understand why 'Der Lotse' did not comment upon it; 'This is Hamburg culture! This unchaste respectability!'; Warburg intends to write something about it in 'Der Lotse'; he is sorry that the family does not like [Ginevra] de' Nobili's paintings; sends greetings to Alice and son Erich |
