Contentsis very pleased that Warburg can work so well and can give close attention to detail etc.; on his method of work, not derived from playing chess; although he likes chess, he finds the sad end of many grand masters very very disturbing; Paul [Warburg] agreed to the draft statutes for the library funds; Max will forward the document to Felix [Warburg]; promises to show largesse, but he has to balance expenditure for the library with demands of a family of seven siblings; he has phantasies of buying a palazzo and living in one wing, Warburg in the other and to devoting the main building to the library to be enjoyed by both of them; hopes to be able to do so in five years; expensive books will always remain valuable, but Max fears that Warburg spends his money on worthless journals; promises Mark 5,000 for 1901; John's [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] problem is that there is no water at the site for the time being so that they have to wait another three months; reminds him to send a cable to [Solomon and Betty] Loeb, who will sail on 'Kaiser Wilhelm der Große' from Bremen to New York on 11/12/1900; Panina [Paul and Nina Warburg] will go to New York in the spring of 1901; Max is busy with his task as Handelsrichter; he does not like the publication 'Der Lotse', [Carl] Mönckeberg is too inexperienced; Dr. Semler has compromised himself; Paul is very happy, the little girl has black hair, Puss [Nina Warburg] is already well and slim, only old Mrs. Petzold stays fat; tells him a joke about Ballin and the Emperor; the parliamentary negotiations re loans went well
