| Contents | [Aby and Mary Warburg received a letter from Nina [Warburg] in Jena, where Paul is thinking of undergoing treatment; Warburg advises him to do so before his trip to the US; Paul needs to be well before going to New York, Warburg does not think much of travelling only to find distraction; calls it 'Schlafwagencultur' ['sleeping car culture']; Morti's [Mortimer Schiff's] family seems to welcome his engagement [to Adèle Neustadt]; calls her 'Miss Highkicker'; news from John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] and [his wife] Lene [Magdalene Hertz] are good, but John seems to work far too much and feels oppressed by Schliemann's ruthlessness; Warburg is working well, he is finding too many interesting documents; wants to spend the summer to write up his research; re lectures in Hamburg: Warburg's father-in-law spoke in private with Werner von Melle who told him that André Jolles will lecture on Italian art in the winter so that Warburg's lectures on a related topic would be too much; but André Jolles wants to lecture on the beginnings of art; Warburg has therefore written to [Heinrich] Klussmann of Oberschulbehörde and received a reply that nothing has been decided; the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz is active; [Heinrich] Brockhaus, following Warburg's advice, has organised discussions and meetings; is pleased that Warburg's parents have gone to Nice again; praises his parents, but complains that they have not taught their children enough self worth; on the one hand they think of themselves as superior, on the other hand they behave submissively to the 'public' who are thought of as enemies and not as friends; is pleased for Paul that he has been elected in the municipal elections; Warburg would like to have a lectureship in Florence; he does not want to look for employment in Hamburg, however, Berlin and Strasbourg would be cities where he would like to live; sends greetings to Alice, Ehrlich [Erich Warburg] |
