| Contents | travelling has one good side: one has time to occupy oneself with oneself; the congress in Innsbruck was badly organised; Warburg is annoyed with himself as he can no longer fight back; he has realized that Max Georg Zimmermann is his enemy; years ago, when Zimmermann founded the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, it was Warburg who helped him; but now, Zimmermann is a member of a number of committees, all of which can do damage to Warburg; but Warburg is spoiling for a good fight, yet, as soon as he is ready to fight, he feels no strength, he feels like somebody suffering from marasmus; in Munich he went to the Staatsbibliothek to look at manuscripts; he was received well, calls himself an animal which does not run without sugar [=recognition, praise]; in the afternoon Warburg visited the 'Glaspalast', paintings by [Friedrich Otto?] Georgi and [Erich?] Erler made a huge impression on him; he neither met [Artur] Weese nor [Hermann?] Behn; Warburg suffered from 'scirocco' [föhn] in Innsbruck; the previous evening he saw [H.] Ibsen's 'Brand', calls it a 'colossal drama of the soul', badly translated, very well acted; the similarities to André Jolles and Brand are striking; Warburg met [Karl] Voll, the conservator of Pinakothek who is hated by the scholars in Berlin; Voll spoke full of admiration of Warburg's book; likes Voll, calls him 'a critical nature-boy'; he might meet him again later this day; Warburg wants to return via Berlin, talk to [Ferdinand] Laban in Berlin; will [Heinrich] Embden travel to Berlin?; Warburg might stay with Mendelssohns for a few days; Warburg thanks Mary for her letters, imagines the committee meeting in the house of Mrs. Zacharias, it would be a very good genre painting by [Adolf] Oberländer; Warburg has already read the review by 'Hirschkuh' [Miss Marie Hirsch], harmless, unnecessary; anyway, it is a sort of advertisement to sell the book and to make profit for the publishers Hermann Seemann; comments that Detta [Marietta Warburg] and her doll Slotzinde should not go too far with imitating the grown-ups [uses the word 'verkuhen' = 'becoming like a cow', giving milk]; he wished their apartment in Hamburg were bigger and his study more isolated from the rest of the rooms; he will stay in Hotel de Rome in Berlin; sends greetings to his mother |
