| Contents | he spent the previous evening with [Alfred and Anna] Doren in Leipzig, their apartment is stuffed full with art, not to Warburg's liking; Ännchen [Anna Doren] is a very charming hostess; Professor [Georg] Steindorff also attended; next day he travelled to Weimar and had his meeting with [Paul] Clemen at 8 am this day; Warburg did not feel any warmth from Clemen towards him; Clemen inquired about the meeting in Dresden [organising the next International Congress of the History of Art]; Clemen spoke against [J.] Strzygowski and Warburg tried to counter him; then they started to discuss conditions for Warburg's appointment in Bonn; Warburg asked whether Bonn University could wait until autumn 1907, but Clemen agreed only halfheartedly; Warburg explained that he needed to finish his big research and Clemen wanted to know when it would be published; Warburg said he might finish by Easter 1907, but Clemen wanted a more certain date; Warburg asked about the colloquium, the examination of a candidate for a professorship; Clemen said that it was a requirement; Warburg tried to suggest that he need not sit such an examination as he was awarded the highest mark for his PhD; Clemen said that he was also awarded the highest mark and he still had to sit the examination; Warburg said that he would not like to sit the examination, Professor [Heinrich] Nissen was a bastard and Clemen agreed; on the difficulty in the faculty if a younger man obtained his Habilitation with an examination and Warburg without it; Warburg and Clemen went together to the exhibition of the Künstlerbund; Warburg and Clemen continued their conversation; Clemen said that [Friedrich] Althoff and [Wilhelm von] Bode want to inject new initiatives into the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz and would therefore like to see 'giri', conducted tours; Warburg asked why such an initiative has to be tied to a civil servant post?; Clemen replied that Althoff thought that people would not come if the tour guides were not academic teachers; Clemen said that Warburg should talk to Bode about being awarded the title 'professor'; Warburg replied that he did not want to talk to Bode before he has finished his big book; Warburg has not asked anything of Bode which Warburg has not deserved; Clemen then suggested that Warburg should talk to Bode about conducting tours; Warburg promised to do so; then Clemen said: Warburg has an enemy in Bonn, [Eduard] Firmenich-Richartz, who does not understand why 'little Warburg' should be appointed professor; Warburg said that Firmenich-Richartz has no say in the appointment procedure and Clemen agreed; Warburg asked how Firmenich-Richartz heard about the negotations; Clemen replied that Firmenich-Richartz came into the room when Clemen discussed it with Thode; Warburg then asked, what Thode thought about it; Clemen said: he thought it acceptable; after the exhibition Warburg and Clemen went to Hofrat von Schiller and then to the Goethe house; Clemen promised not to negotiate with any other candidate until Easter 1907 and to wait for the publication of Warburg's book at Easter; Warburg confided to Mary that the situation was such that Warburg can finish the book by Easter, but this does not change the fact that he does not like Clemen; characterizes Clemen, oscillating, not immersed into his profession, full of attitudes and affectations; Clemen has no contact with [Georg] Loeschcke; the end result is that everything is still possible, but everything depends on Warburg's energy; asks her to keep the letter, he wants to insert it into his diary |
