| Contents | thanks for letters from Mary and Detta [Marietta Warburg]; hopes that Detta [Marietta Warburg] is recovering; hopes that the family enjoyed the Easter egg hunt; asks her to forward Miss [Helene] Höhnk's papers to Max Warburg or Wilhelm Gossler; wants to send [James] Mooney and Miss [Virginia] Barton a photograph of Mary and the children; two days previously Warburg visited Schäffer and his family; there he met the young Randorff, who made an excellent impression on Warburg and told him that the Käte Liebermann's engagement was called off; the previous evening he spent with Springers, they send greetings; he will not return to Hamburg in time for a performance of 'Alkestis'; has nothing against Mary seeing it; mentions André Jolles [the co-author of 'Alkestis'], who is nothing more to Warburg than an item from 'the variety show of life'; Warburg has arranged a 'tableau', a collection of images, of Fortuna, in order to have a better overview of the material; with the help of this arrangement the whole development of ideas became clear, an elementary method which so far has been omitted; he finished reading [Max] Weber which was equally elementary and fruitful; he realized that sociologists and he attempt the same thing, to understand the development of modern man; through reading Weber he has realized the general value of his own research; lists difficulties, termed 'external', which must not happen again in his working process; is determined that these difficulties must not continue, whether they will live in Hamburg or Bonn; asks her to create an atmosphere of calm for him, freedom, space, as he needs them; Mary's and Warburg's aim has to be to safeguard that his research gets better, not that his research is finished on time; this message goes to her but even more so to himself |
