| Contents | forwards a letter by [Ernst] Ehrenbaum; hopes that Ehrenbaum might be employed in the zoological institute in Hamburg soon ; Warburg cannot repeat often enough that the theorist, if he is to be of practical use, needs the scholar's distance to the object of his research; 'Darwin would not have become a brilliant researcher by moving his living quarters into the monkey house'; practicians and theorists have to go their different ways but have to fight in a united front; if they are too near to each other, they get into each other's way; Ehrenbaum said that a new marine station in Cuxhaven would be a more expensive institute; Ehrenbaum is the man who can set up an aquarium in Hamburg which will be an asset for the zoological garden; Hamburg needs an aquarium; Warburg was informed recently that [Alfred] Lichtwark applied for funds to build an annex, but was turned down; Warburg is very sorry to hear this, it would not permit Lichtwark to put the Kunsthalle on a better footing, which is urgently required; on the question of setting up a university in Hamburg: Warburg reiterates his view, that a professioral appointment is justified only if the professor is given the task to pursue his research within the confines of an institute, with colleagues collaborating with him; the funds needed for this is capital which will bear fruit; 'the thinking theorist of today is the successful practician of tomorrow' |
