Contentsis sorry that he had to upset their travel plans; he is very shocked with Detta's [Marietta Warburg's] poor marks at school and she has to be made to feel the consequences; 'freedom is the result forced out of conscientiousness'; thanks her for telling him Detta's [Marietta Warburg's] marks; he has seen the exhibition of books in Hamburg; it is too bad that neither the Kunstgewerbemuseum nor the Stadtbibliothek were represented officially; he knows the mysterious relief; approves of the fact that Mary and Miss Margaret [Thurnham] went to see the exhibition; characterizes [Wilhelmine] Niels: she is a mix of self discipline and ugly hysterical complete bewilderment, but he realizes that one cannot abandon her; with Krahnstöver he does not admire their 'greatness of soul', but the clarity and modesty in their 'household of the soul', no great expenditure, but respect for what is there; agrees that Berlin will not be an ideal place for his follow-up cure, but he will not stay for the duration of the whole congress; the main thing is that Warburg and Mary can talk to each for a few days unmolested; he does not want to meet any friends in Berlin, Mary should not write to [Mr and Mrs] du Bois-Reymond
