Contentsacknowledges receipt of her and the Davidsohn letter; he visited Dr. Jäckh, who is knowledgeable about Oriental matters; he is on [H] Löhlein's staff; he said that Turkey and Romania would stay on the side of the Central powers; five German-Turkish boats are already in the Black Sea in order to block the Russians; Warburg does not like the news of aircraft flying over German positions; Max [Warburg] gave a dinner party at Hiller's the previous evening; [Robert and Philippine] Davidsohn attended, Ballin, Mrs. von Holtzendorff, Regendanz, Hoff; later in the day Warburg will call on [M.] Erzberger, then go to Springers in Knesebeckstrasse 58; the American Secretary informed him that they will publish a note in the newspapers that Britons living in Germany could travel back to the UK by special arrangement; [Aby Warburg and Mary Warburg] do not have the right to stop Miss Margaret Thurnham from leaving; the mood in Berlin is not optimistic, more a kind of quiet resignation; he saw a procession of soldiers streaming to the railway station, followed by women, children; some of the faces were fabulous; is shocked about the news that soldiers are starving, they do not even get good portions on the eve of battle; the human being is less well off than many higher animals
