| Contents | she is writing sitting at Mrs. Becker's [Bianca Emilie Rohland-Becker, known as 'Milly'] desk; Detta [Marietta Warburg] and Renate play outside; she feels very much at home there; the previous day was the big day in Worpswede; weather was cloudy, more fitting for the landscape than sunshine; she loves the village with its large farmsteads; they saw the art exhibition, put together by a brother of Heinrich Vogeler's; however, the brother has been killed in action, but his wife is continuing the business; she saw wonderful sculptures by [B.] Hoetger, portraits, every head in an individual style, simply wonderful; Paula Modersohn's paintings fill an entire room; although she had seen some beforehand, she is still enthusiastic about them, it is a joy to see them; when looking at them she feels deep devotion, praises Modersohn's legendary art, colours etc; there were early drawings of Modersohn, reminding Mary of Dürer; she also found Vogeler's paintings most interesting, scenes from the military front or very near the front, a road in Kalisch beautifully fresh and colourful, a small portrait of Graf Kessler; a portrait of Otto Modersohn was great, almost a caricature; there were arts and crafts objects, Mary chose beautiful blankets and fabrics for future Christmas and birthday presents; she also visited the Vogelers, walked to them via Weyerberg; she likes Mrs. Vogeler, she loves the house, the garden, the landscape; Mrs. Vogeler is a weaver, has installed a weaving studio; Detta [Marietta Warburg] was very much taken by it all; they also visited Hoetger in his large farmstead, next to the former studio of Paula Modersohn, where the celebrations for Milly [Becker] had been held; it has been refurbished, the house is beautiful, the garden is dotted with Hoetger's sculptures; Warburg would have liked Hoetger, he was so different from the first time when they met him at Marc Rosenberg's; Hoetger's wife was in Darmstadt, selling the apartment; Hoetger's assistant, Miss Räder, was also there and Mrs. Düllberg, née Arnheim; Hoetger is making a portrait bust of Mrs. Düllberg; Hoetger found Detta's [Marietta Warburg's] head very interesting, he asked Mary whether he could make a sketch of her head; would Warburg allow him to sketch Detta?; and would Warburg allow Mary to spend some time in Worpswede and learn from Hoetger?; she will go back to Hamburg for the weekend and return to Worpswede on Monday, 20/09/1915; Mary will also apologise for Detta's absence from her work in the day-home for girls on 21/09/1915; Buchsbaum [Amalie Buck] will look after the house and family during Mary's absence; requests a phone call or cable from him; she wants to observe Hoetger work, it would give her the courage to start again |
