| Contents | thanks him for letters of 03/ and 13/08/1916; on the military situation, finds that the Germans are in a tunnel; the Austrians want peace at any price; the Italian successes are dangerous because they inflate the sense of superiority of their enemies, termed 'bandits'; the Germans do not have enough raw materials; daily more planes are manufactured but the French and English simply have more than the Germans; one success is that the Bulgarians still block the Romanians joining the Entente; after the war Germany will sit as if between two millstones, England and Russia/Japan; calls the Americans the 'pimps of the fury of war', it is time that they wake up from their dream, dreaming of luxuries; England has lost all credibility as protector of small nations, the execution of [R] Casement will be revenged; the 'Nationalausschuß für einen ehrenvollen Frieden' will soon stop working, Röchling and Thyssen have left it, [Adolf von] Harnack has spoken too strongly against private business; on the 'elasticity' of business circles, the main weapon in the fight for survival; rails against [E.] von Heydebrand on the one hand and the Socialists on the other who cannot rein in their followers; it will take quite a while until Germany is a unified nation; it is therefore too early to reform the suffrage; advises him to carry on reading 'Frankfurter Zeitung' as 'Hamburger Fremdenblatt' is a weak newspaper; Warburg was instrumental in [Heinz] Marr's appointment in Frankfurt; Warburg met Merton in Berlin and praised Marr, Dr. Kahn seemed not convinced, but Professor Stein spoke up for Marr |
