Contentsthanks for forwarded letter, is pleased with the 'voice' [Margaret Thurnham] from afar; requests precise information on the return of the family so that he can send a car to meet them at the train station; Mary can imagine how depressed he is with the news from the war; for the first time in the war he could not read the newspapers; Mr. and Mrs. [Albrecht] Mendelssohn Bartholdy had lunch with them at Kösterberg; is impressed by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, calls him a 'bridge builder' between ethics and law; the wife is from Saxony, but despite it very charming; Warburg had a long chat with Max [Warburg], knows his 'heroic pessimism', is gripped by the clarity which does not obscure his active humanity; Warburg will never reach this level of serenity, although Max expects it from him; Warburg read [Theodor] Fontane, is impressed and could learn something from Fontane's irony; on the court case of the 'Frankfurter Zeitung' against Chamberlain; repeats what he has said all along, that Germany cannot be helped if it does not recognize who are its enemies; but what can one say if even decent people, like uncle Ernest Merck, think that the 'Frankfurter Zeitung' can be corrupted?; on the crisis of Germany, a degenerative will for power; Prinz Heinrich is the worst type embodying German blindness; it will be a very bad year; only hopes that he will not break down; he cannot stand himself; is happy to read that the family has long chats; he sent Mark 600; Lieutenant Burg sent flounders which Warburg presented to Alice [Warburg]
