| Contents | Frede's birthday starts badly in Kreuzlingen; the staff have taken away from him all sorts of things, Warburg's own copy of his Luther book, the copy of speeches on the occasion of Charlotte Warburg's funeral, some 'Hamburger Fremdenblatt' issues, the review by [Rudolf] Bernoulli; Nurse Frieda allowed him to keep a picture of Frede, but he does not have one; feels that the next demand might be that he has to stop his correspondence with Mary; he would accept his lot if he knew that it would make his family better; is sure that they are near him in Kreuzlingen, he cannot see or hear them, it tortures him not being able to reach them; the staff are sly, calls them 'Untiere' [monsters], hopes that they do not blacken his name; how will he get to the bottom of it all? |
