Contentsreplies to Max Warburg's request for information on the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz; founded in 1889 by German scholars and friends of art in Florence, it offered a scholarly place of work to scholars working in Italy; it was enlarged in 1893, the Verein zur Erhaltung des Kunsthistorischen Institutes in Florenz was established; some years later the German Reich subsidized its work by Goldmark 15,000 per annum; the Institute has a library with 12,000 volumes, 20,000 photographs, a subject catalogue, a collection of casts of coins, slide projectors; there are two reading rooms, offices for the director, assistant and librarian; the Institute organises lectures throughout the year and a course with conducted tours every spring; after World War I the Institute also doubled up as centre where photographs could be ordered; the president of the Institute is Wilhelm von Bode, his deputy is Staatssekretär Lewald and a committee of 30 experts, among them Warburg; in Florence there is a director [Heinrich Bodmer], three assistants, among them one librarian; caused by the catastrophic financial situation after the war, the Institute needs additional funds to continue with its work, some US Dollar 1,000; enclosed a letter by Bode about the financial situation of the Institute [not extant]
