| Contents | thanks for letter by [O.] Franke; he had to get up early, curses the laxative Cascara; he was given a large dose of opium; asks Mary whether he ever was fond of sweets things; doubts it, because of his diabetes, but has craving for chocolate ever since his stay in Jena; on 'Saturn', asks Mary to forward his information to Saxl and Panofsky; she is his 'Kamerad'; Saxl and Panofsky have not paid enough attention that the Greek myth of Chronos, the god of time, who has at its origin a Latin chthonic [subterranean] crop deity; the 'Grabscheit' [spade] of the child of Saturn is the instrument of destruction of the earth but also of opening up the earth for planting seeds; by burying the seed it can develop; this is the reason why Saturn 'devours' his children and why he mows them with a scythe; the corn will grow, but not the people, who stay in the earth, the eternal cycle of sowing and harvesting, etc; Faust uses the spade, not for digging graves, but for making land fertile for people; orders a Mouson soap, Pebeco; greetings to Frede, Datzen [Marietta Warburg], 'Bücherstube' [library staff], wants to know when Marietta will return home; tells Mary to be careful working with frozen fingers; greetings to Lili du Bois-Reymond; is waiting for books by [W.] Storck and [E.] Darmstaedter; orders Detta [Marietta] to return to Hamburg, [Heinrich] Embden to come to Kreuzlingen and somebody to take him home immediately |
