| Contents | on the price of the heliogravure; Amsler & Ruthardt informed him that it is out of print; encloses a short note by him 'Aus der Frühzeit der Sparbanken', for the centenary of the 'Hamburger Sparcasse, 1827-1927', a present by M. M. Warburg & Co: Warburg explains the image on the only original Florentine engraving in the British Museum, c. 1480, reproduced as heliogravure by Reichsdruckerei; a Franciscan monk, Fra Marco, preaching in front of a multitude to collect money for a 'monte di pietà', 'Berg des Mitleids', the name for saving banks; in the middle one can see a mighty mountain of money, already brought by the listeners; it is intended to fund works of charity, symbolised by little buildings and to fund alms to pilgrims who want to visit the Holy Places; therefore the map of the Orient in the background; the savings bank accepted pawns and gave money for a small percentage in order to protect poor people against usury; Christ and Mary enthroned, between angels and saints, promise the donors eternal salvation |
