Contents | detailed account of impressions in Düsseldorf; he met Professor [Eduard] Zacharias, also Jürgens, Reiche and Haphel [?]; he saw paintings by Simone Marmion, Conrad Witz, from Rottweil, with his painting from the Strasbourg Gallery, and Zuluaga, 'the cheeky Spaniard'; relates the episode when he managed to get Professor Carl Justi to view the painting by [Ignacio] Zuloaga although Justi is an enemy of modernity; he met André [Jolles] and Carl Mönckeberg, Max Friedländer [Max J. Friedländer?], the art dealer [Jacques?] Seligmann, who spoke to him about the pedlar and monkey cup and [Manlio?] Dazzi; Justi and his sister had been separated in the morning; however, Warburg found the sister and brought her to Justi so that Justi agreed to view the exhibition with Warburg; repeats Justi's comments when viewing Zuloaga's paintings, Justi had never seen so many paintings of 'ugly Spanish women'; Justi conceded, though, that there was still something of Velazquez in the paintings; Warburg promised to visit Justi soon; on his tie pin: if she cannot find it, she should only speak to Max [Warburg] and to nobody else about it |
