Contentsone year ago they lived abroad and felt great as sons of a great country; this year, Warburg is in the US and Doren is in the 'tamest of civilised countries'; both are lonely; complains about Leipzig, it is a 'dirty village' with only one location where to find art, although there is a great deal of music; scholarship is fine, the professors are amicable; he has spoken with [Karl] Lamprecht and [Gustav von] Schmoller; the club in Florence is flourishing; H. Ulmann is successful with his lectures, some 40 people attend, thinks he is the director of the as yet unborn Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz; at Christmas there was a ball, organised by the brothers Böcklin; Pensione Laurent is full; there was a party when Doren left; he looks back to his time in Florence with fondness, particularly to the times spent with Warburg; mentions Krahnstövers, Bulles; Doren visited frequently Kaufmanns; he receives many letters, particularly from [Luigi and Anna] Petri, [Emilie and Alceste] Giorgetti, Gasperini, Miss Hastings; Miss Woodman, the two 'singing bards', Mrs. Howe, who asked whether she should send her daughter Mary to study philology in Germany; he spent Christmas with his family in Frankfurt and told them of his plans [to marry Anne Pietsch]; he then went to Berlin, to meet the P. [Pietsch] family, where he also met John H. [Johann Nicolaus Hertz]; Paul Ruben is expected to arrive in Berlin soon; reminds Warburg not to forget the old hemisphere; wonders whether Warburg will bring back a 'Greenbacks-Millioneuse'
