Contentson his book about the Ghirlandaio heads; he will include a discussion of the Giotto fresco, the confirmation of the order by St. Francis, in Santa Croce [Florence]; in the course of his research it became obvious to him how much two figures ['Mantelfiguren'] are like Dürer's two apostles in Munich; would the figures in the Giotto painting have been made to look like the Dürer paintings in the course of the conservation process?; could Brockhaus go and have a look for himself?; thanks him for his letter [in the W. Uhde affair]; Brockhaus is right, one can give only one reply: to do better work; quotes a letter by [Friedrich] Nietzsche to Paul Deussen, 1887, on the work of the artist and the craftsman: without proper application nothing can grow, the best artist cannot be distinguished from the craftsman when looked at in close quarters, 'I hate the rabble who does not value crafts and only wants to taste the delicacies of the spirit'; Warburg's comment: 'the Supermen on Easter holidays will not jot this down in their notebooks'; sends greetings to Mrs. Else Brockhaus, to [Robert and Philippine] Davidsohn
