Contentsa letter marked 'confidential', with an enclosure, extant, describes the sequence of events surrounding an article by Mayer and Lichtwark's step to have the information suppressed; the financier Sir Alfred Beit, in London, had donated money to the Kunsthalle to be used on portrait paintings of public personalities; Lichtwark had sent his secretary to the newspaper office to request that Mayer's article be suppressed; since Mayer's article did appear in print, he had received a number of letters by painters requesting commissions for the Kunsthalle, which had been embarrassing to him; therefore he had to write to the Frankfurter Zeitung; cutting from the Frankfurter Zeitung
