Dr. George] Deycke in Hamburg; on talking to Thilenius; as Thilenius has [Werner] von Melle's ear, Bendixen asks him to convince Melle not to allow Deycke to leave the 'Wissenschaftliche Stiftung'; Thilenius said that he has acted in the matter already, the Senate should apply to the Bürgerschaft for funds for Deycke; the Wissenschaftliche Stiftung will only then pick up the bill, when the Bürgerschaft should decline to do so; the money could be found by postponing the expedition to the South Seas; Melle wants [Carl August?] Schröder to act; finds the proposal correct: only when the Senate declines to pick up the bill, should the Wissenschaftliche Stiftung do so; Melle has probably voted for [med.Dr.] Rumpel against Deycke; therefore Schröder has to be informed and convinced; Bendixen spoke with [Albert?] Wolffson in the stock exchange, but he declined to be the intermediary; what about [Hermann] Lenhartz?; suggests a well-known medical doctor from Hamburg; what about the press?; [Felix] von Eckardt is keen to run an article on Deycke; what could [Heinrich] Embden do in this matter?; Bendixen will be for Deycke, but cannot show his colours openly |
