Contentsthanks him for Warburg's kind offer [to use Warburg's library in Hamburg]; he had no time in Munich to give Warburg further information on the many images of planets in the Islamic exhibition; he has come to the conclusion that these images have developed from images from classical antiquity; it will not be difficult to explain their history; it is an art historical parallel to a development in religion: the religion of the Ssabeans [also Sabaists, star worshippers] developed from hermetic cults; the descriptions of planets used by the Ssabeans, who call themselves 'Hellenes', is analogous to images one can still find on those monuments which are extant; refers to Richard Reitzenstein's 'Poimandres' and Dan Avraamovich Khvolson's [also Chwolson] 'Die Ssabier und der Ssabismus', [Reinhart] Dozy and [M.J. de] Goeje; it is interesting to note in this context that on the capitals of the Palazzo Ducale in Venice the planets return, riding on Arabic signs of the zodiac, and how they metamorphose into planets, riding not on the zodiac, but on horses, in the Vienna manuscript and the manuscript of the Hausbuchmeister; he pursued his research into Albricus and Fulgentius, mentions that [Bruno Archibald] Fuchs interpreted a passage by [Ernst] Maass incorrectly; hopes that a woman theologian will help him to interpret the role the planets played in scholasticism
