Contentsthanks him for a copy of Warburg's Luther book; found it very interesting, spellbinding; feels ashamed because art historians are not interested in the contents of things, Cappella Chigi etc, and only stick to problems of form; Warburg found 'nests of darkness' from Babylon to Northern Germany; humanity achieved a breakthrough in the 16th century, from being chained to fate to understanding reality; Kautzsch himself had studied Dürer's 'Melencolia I' and seen the despair in Paul Weber's sense; Warburg's book goes beyond Giehlow, clears up the last questions which even Wölfflin could not solve; Warburg's research confirms Kautzsch's understanding of history of art; his life's ambition is to write the history of the development of medieval architecture which can stand as mirror of medieval intellectual history; he tries to provide more than simply a history of how things were represented; the change is visible in sculpture, in the development of religious life from the 13th to the 14th century; it is interesting to note that the 'Wiener Schule' has developed on similar lines in the last few years, he received a letter from [Max[ Dvorak in this vein shortly before Dvorak's death
