Contentsthanks him for New Year greetings and good wishes and the gift of glasses on the occasion of the wedding of his daughter Mathilde [Embden]; his sister Marianne suffered an embolism at the wedding and is in hospital; on a new diabetes drug which [Heinrich] Embden does not recommend; is very pleased about the progress of Warburg's work; on bankruptcies in Hamburg; the situation is diametrically opposed to a Parker Gilbert [Canadian novelist, wrote 'The Promised Land' in 1928] type of optimism; on a brain operation he witnessed in Berlin, executed by Emil Heymann; he saw the [V.] van Gogh collection of Mrs. Kröller in Berlin and the [L.v.] Kalckreuth collection of [Max] Liebermann, Max Slevogt, Lovis Corinth paitings; he liked the Corinth paintings, but finds the building 'tasteless'; he enjoyed reading two volumes 'Eckermann' and his impressions of Goethe; finds it understandable that [Franz] Alber went to see the Pope
