Nippen: president of their circle; can drink a lot; traces the name back to 'Knippen', 'Kneipen';Ludwig Byns: a translation of the English 'I am' into the local Andernach dialect; Hans Nirrnheim: 'Nierenheim', hinting at his ability to urinate quickly; F. Scheidt: pun with a song in German starting 'Scheiden tut weh', especially as 'Fuchsmajor'; Paul Ruben: 'roibdeo' [written in Greek letters] - to slurp noisily; Johannes Calinich: 'Cyan Kalinich';H. May: large, beaming chap; A. [Adolf?] Schultz: the name does not mean much and cannot characterize its bearer better; [Richard] Robinow: the only thing one can say about him is that the name is very long, like its bearer; Otto Hartz: easily inflammable; A.
