Contents | Felix and Frieda left for Venice the previous day; Warburg is very taken by them; he wished for Felix a more definite role in the business; he also complains that Felix and Frieda use both German and English and mix up the languages; they enjoyed visiting museums; they treated him like a 'harmless good old uncle'; is pleased to read in Moritz Warburg's letter, that the Warburg family have rented a house in the countryside for the summer; thanks for a brochure on Italy; tells them to keep the 'Pan' journal in Hamburg; he will travel to Rome, Hotel Quirinale, but does not know how long he will stay; everything depends on whether he will get hayfever; Capitano Faruli, a decent man and recommended by Mrs. [Jessie] Hillebrand, of whom Warburg thinks highly, would like to meet the Warburgs in Altona; asks his father to write a letter of introduction for Faruli; sends greetings to the women Lazarus and Schiff [one of them Jenny Schiff] who behaved very reasonably in Florence; R. Muther's book ought to be in Hamburg; the previous day Warburg sent his parents the first copy of his article 'I costumi teatrali'; it is a totally new attempt to describe the beginnings of modern opera; he was able to prove the most interesting connection between the ideas of antiquity and early Renaissance; he views the article a compendium piece to his book on Botticelli; so far, opinions about his article are very good; but one can never know with Italians; it is a beautiful thing to go one's own ways, but it is hardly practical; is convinced that the 'philistine' [H.] Ulmann will have got far in his career when Warburg will still be roaming around freely; Warburg is not interested in being a 'Privatdozent', a lecturer not attached to a university; complains about Paul Warburg, who should have added a few words to the letters forwarded to Warburg from Frankfurt |
