Contentsacknowledges receipt of letter from Olli [Olga Warburg] and Felix Warburg; he returned to Santa Fé from Albuquerque on 22/01/1896; on 23/01/1896 he saw an [American] Indian dance being performed in San Ildefonso; the Indians were dressed as animals, buffaloes, stags, antilopes and walked and moved like the animals; the Indians believe that the animals are demigods, their dances are like prayers of intercession for rain; he took photographs and will send them prints; Warburg bought a little Kodak camera, which might interest Fritz Warburg; he will send a number of Indian pots, garments, objects to Hamburg; requests the objects to be unpacked and a display cupboard be made by Knaack, like those in the ethnographical museum; hopes that place can be found for his rarities, as he does not need space for a wife; he will travel to Los Angeles the next day and then on his return journey to the two reservations of the Zuni and Hopi; mentions his army papers, which Max Warburg has forwarded to New York; wants to know whether he has to report to the army in the summer; asks his mother to see to it that his membership fee for the 'Künstlerische Gesellschaft für Photographische Publikationen' is paid; it can be done via Commeter'sche Kunsthandlung und Verlagsanstalt; life in Sante Fé is very different from life in the East of the USA; nobody has much money, people are very friendly; Warburg makes visits, is invited, very often by women who are, like in Germany, the 'vehicles' of education; it is mainly German scholars who express scientific interest in the Indians; the Americans themselves are not yet interested in the Indians
