ContentsBida Hotschi, the Navajo name for 'red rock', is a strange place; three people live there, Mr. Morpin, who owns the adobe house, the coachman Frank Allen, a Mormon, six foot three inches tall and Warburg, called 'Tartarin chez les Indiens' [cf. Tartarin of Tarascon, by Alphonse Daudet]; his coachman and Warburg were very pleased reaching the little house after an eight hour trip through an Arizona sandstorm; they are half way to Keams Canyon; Mr. Keams is the trader for the Hopi Indians; he made a trip from Fort Wingate to a Zuni Pueblo, accompanied by his friend Lieutenant [Roger B.] Bryan; he stayed in Fort Wingate for eight days and enjoyed himself very much there; the trip to the Zuni was not as interesting as he had hoped as they were all busily working in the fields; encloses a letter of recommendation to General [G. H.] Burton which he obtained through the good services of Mr. [Charles] Altschul, Lazarus Bank San Francisco, London, Paris; it is a good example how Americans support decent people; in Germany one would have to be the son of the defence minister to get a similar reference; cont. on 22/04/1896, Keams Canyon: he has safely reached the goal of his travels after a seven hour drive through a howling sandstorm; they met Navajo Indians who were building a house and two carts, otherwise nobody else on the 25 miles of track; he would not have lasted for a third day of such a travel; a Navajo Indian will post his letter in Holbrook, after two days riding; Warburg will return to New York in May; requests news, letters, wants to know about Max Warburg, aunt Mali [Amalie Goldschmidt], aunt Rosa [Schiff]; Mr. Keams is very charming and has welcomed Warburg warmly; thanks Olli [Olga Warburg] for her letter from Frankfurt
