| Contents | the Hugo von der Goes painting will remain in Florence; describes it and analyses it; he likes it very much; finds the expression on the face of the Madonna 'naturally religious'; Christ's forehead shows a resemblance to the forehead of the Madonna; it reminded him of a Memling painting he saw many years ago in Bruges; he visited Uffizi, Pitti, Accademia several times and each time he felt elated, warm; he enjoyed the drawings in the Uffizi, especially the Madonna by Lippi, Botticelli drawings, [Cornelis van] Poelenburgh, Holbein, Lucas Cranach; they visited S. Marguerita, enjoyed the view; the next day they will travel with Alice [Hallgarten] to Pisa; the Warburg family plan to visit Rome the next year, they want to see Michelangelo's art; in the evening they will go to the Pagliano theatre, the Crown Prince and his wife will also attend; forwards photographs, comments that they are not very good as Louise Warburg has spoken just then when they were taken; Mrs. [Anna] Petri brought him a letter from Mr. [William J.] Palmer, which Moritz forwards to Warburg; Lucia Oppenheim is right, anybody who has been in Italy can never 'stagnate'; he likes Oskar and Elisa Bulle-Rigutini, met a sculptor in their house, [Georg] Roemer, who sends greetings to Warburg; sends greetings to Adolph Goldschmidt and [Johann Nicolaus] Hertz |
