Contents | Olga writes that Mary Hertz needs to be influenced, which Warburg can do very gently; if he keeps to his point of view as Jew, he will have the strength to represent this point of view; all he needs to say to her is: 'I will carry a part of your responsibility'; all that is asked from both is to keep up appearances; father is happy if the form of religious life is kept; Warburg has sometimes preferred open disrespect to being a hypocrite, but her view is that children, out of respect for their parents, can easily justify 'a lack of openness' in their dealings with parents; father would only ask for Warburg's promise, but no action; but Senator [Adolph Ferdinand] Hertz thinks that father would expect more than a promise, he would expect actions; therefore Senator Hertz requests a written statement; father would feel cornered and demand things, which in reality he would never have expected; it is time that Warburg informs Senator Hertz and Mary about Moritz Warburg's views; it has been a great step for Moritz to give up the demand that Mary converts; what he now demands is so small, although for him it is everything, that the children will be raised without a religion and not as Christians; she has the feeling that Warburg does not find father's point of view justified, but has to tell him that all his siblings find it justified; she has just spoken with John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] who understands the Warburg family's point of view but only Warburg can do something about it; Warburg has to talk to Mary, she can hand on the beauty of Christianity, but in order to do so it is not necessary to believe in Christ; Max writes that Warburg will meet John [Hertz] on 20/04/1897 and hopes that Warburg will return to Hamburg on 21/04/1897; they will speak and Warburg needs to explain father's point of view to Mary before her departure; Warburg should organise his travel plans in such a way as to carry on directly from Hamburg to Paris |
