Contents | thanks him for birthday greetings; discusses his wish for her, that the new year might bring her what she desires; reminds him of their conversation in the train station in Florence [in December 1888]; their friendship is not based alone on their interest in art history; she knows that he understands her, she remembers that she told him that she can talk with him about everything; art has brought them together, but they would learn to understand each other better if they could share daily life with each other; is sorry that they had very little time to talk in the summer as Warburg was busy with his studies; reminds him that not only he has difficult times, other people experience them as well; she is ashamed that she is not as hard working as Warburg; she ought to have progressed far more as artist; the many presents, which she has to make, are not an excuse for her lack of progress; for her as woman the main aim in life is to make other people happy; she is working on an oil portrait of Emily Jauch and enjoys it tremendously; 'it is strange how art, even imitative art, can make oneself immensely happy at times, at other times one is dejected and desperate'; John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] and Max [Max L. Strack?] have left Hamburg the previous day; her father wants to go with Mary to The Hague and Amsterdam for a few days |
