Contentsthanks him for letter of 03/03/1896 and the book 'Purple Cow' [by Gelett Burgess]; has heard that Warburg has decided not to travel to Japan; understands that his research in Indian questions is not finished; she has not as much progressed in her painting as she thinks he has in his research; it is possible that Warburg will find life in Hamburg quite dull; hints at a scandal in Kunstverein which just shows how philistine Hamburg is; people, led by Mr. Wichmann, the chocolatier, were trying to get rid of A. Lichtwark; it makes her sad and therefore is even more happy when meeting sensible people like Warburg's sister-in-law Nina; she is a wonderful woman and Mary and Nina have become friends; Nina is just the woman Mary wants to be, but will never become; however, Mary hopes she will improve; refers to his passage, that the two of them have been too upright; she feels the burden of duties upon her; but assures him that she does not only lead a life full of duties; the other day she spent on the Elbe, drunk with light and air and springtime; calls it being 'morally tipsy'; there is another 'Dilettantenausstellung' in Hamburg, she exhibits works of art, she produced the poster which Lichtwark admired very much; she is very much looking forward to Warburg's visit to her room, listening to his stories; at the beginning of May she will move to the countryside to paint; she expects John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz] in the evening for the Easter holidays; Max [Max L. Strack] has already arrived
