Contentsis pleased that they found a light and sunny apartment; is happy for Warburg to lead the 'English' life of a private scholar without the need to kowtow to anybody; how many professors would be very happy to lead Warburg's life!; advises him to publish short essays, letters etc. as his aphorisms are often the very best he can give; re setting up funds for Warburg's library: Paul, Felix and Max are agreed that they want to support this project; Max will draft a simple statute for a 'Geschwisterfonds', a fund administered by two officers in the name of the Warburg brothers; everybody contributes as much money as they want to contribute; in this way funds will be generated which will enable Warburg to purchase books; suggests that Warburg should make a declaration that his own library is part of the fund in exchange for receiving annual sums of money for the fund; how much money does Warburg need per year?; Warburg should not consider luxury items, they do not want to build up a library like the Medicis, but a library which meets Warburg's needs; Malice [Max and Alice Warburg] received wonderful photographs of Rodin sculptures from Paris; originally they wanted to share them with Mary Warburg, but now do not want to let them go; Max therefore has ordered another set for Mary, paid for by Paul and Max; agrees with Warburg that Strakosch is a dear and efficient man; Max confesses that he does not think highly of André Jolles; Jolles might have an acute understanding of things but it does not justify his arrogance; Max was very pleased with Wilhelm's [Hertz] promotion [to Amtsrichter]; the discussions about John [Johann Nicolaus Hertz]'s project [in Helmstedt] proceed satisfactorily, the problem seems to be lack of water where they want to site the factory; the board will travel to Helmstedt in the next week so that Max will be able to report more fully afterwards; business in M. M.Warburg & Co is up, the Hamburg loan went well; Schinkel offered Max Warburg a partnership in Discontgesellschaft; Max, however, does not want to part from M.M. Warburg & Co; Moritz Warburg is tired, needs his annual holiday in Ostend; in contrast, 'old Loeb' [Solomon] is very active; Charlotte Warburg is wonderful as one can discuss everything with her; Alice wanted to talk Solomon Loeb into buying [Ginevra] de' Nobili paintings, but she did not do so as she does not like the paintings; Dr. Bülau died of kidney failure; on an incident in the office with the apprentice Mr. Krauel, son of a post office employee, who had stolen money from the office; Max had to talk to the father and the apprentice who confessed to the theft; Max stressed that he would dismiss him but would not inform the police; the young man left the office and shot himself, dying instantly; Max is sorry for the parents; Max will now institute new security measures in the office which he wanted to do for some time
