Contentsthanks him for a letter; is grateful for being permitted to summarize his views about increasing the number of professorships in Hamburg; the philosophy lectures are very popular; approves of plans of establishing a chair of philosophy, with lectures in the history of philosophy, logics, psychology, ethics, history of pedagogics; it is of paramount importance to establish a university in Hamburg; he has seen for himself who important a university is for the life of a city, when he worked in Basle with Jacob Burckhardt and Friedrich Nietzsche; there is a process of mutual enrichment, cross-fertilization of ideas between academe and the business world; hopes that the citizens of Hamburg will opt for establishing a university which will be of great importance not only for Hamburg but for the cultural life of Germany
