ContentsChristmas was fine, everybody is well; Mary and the children were with them on Boxing Day; wishes him a good New Year and speedy recovery; is pleased that Warburg has made friends in Jena; Wilhelm would like to visit him, but cannot leave his work; he and his wife would need a holiday, but they cannot afford one; their children are well, is pleased that [Wilhelm's son] Hans will finish his school soon; he may want to read law; Eva [Hertz] is a lovely daughter, helping her mother; Dorothee is very sweet and funny, talks a lot, adored Christmas; his wife has presented him with a silhouette of Eva, she cut it herself; she also sculpted a new head of the little girl, so that he now has her head as a one year old, two years old and three years old girl; he will hang them in his office; is very busy with church business, drafting laws about teaching religion in school, about dismissing ministers, divorce; the orthodox Protestants want to establish a central authority so that they can sack 'heretical' ministers; but he hopes he can stop such a development; Hamburg has adopted a social democrat constitution; is pleased about Max Adolph, who seems to enjoy his life in Plön; is very pleased that Wilhelm Hertz's friendship with [Moritz] Liepmann is growing; sends New Year greetings
