Siemers on 05/02/1908; Siemers spoke with Holthusen who explained that he does not want to be involved in matters of appointments, he was only interested in the finance and technical side of things; Siemers then grasped the nettle and spoke with [Werner] von Melle; it transpired that von Melle wanted to use the funds of the Wissenschaftliche Stiftung for a new project, a colonial Academy; as to the appointment [of Dr. med. G. Deycke], von Melle thinks that this is a matter for the state, not for the Stiftung; Senator [Carl August?] Schröder agreed and it is hoped that the applicant will receive funds for his research into leprosy; it seems clear to Warburg that von Melle will do everything not to fund [G. Deycke]; mentions Dr. Westphal; Warburg mentions another option, to have the whole matter discussed again in a meeting of the Wissenschaftliche Stiftung, introduced by [H.] Lenhartz; Warburg noted that it was not in the intention of the donors that the Wissenschaftliche Stiftung was used as a fund at the disposal of the Oberschulbehörde, ['Talerstrumpf']; not to believe in private initiative might be the way things are done in Hamburg, but they are hardly republican; things are organised differently in Prussia, Siemers had to concede, but it is clear that Siemers will not really speak up for the project; what can be done now? |
